I remember it like it was yesterday. Walk to the store on this awesome sunny day in Montreal, was married back then so going to fetch milk. Arriving at the store clerk was watching tv and saw the first plane hit right there. Paid for milk, ran home and put the tv on and was glued to the tube and laptop all day.

I was flipping through the channels looking for the kids station, and came across the news. I stopped to watch it for a few seconds and saw the second plane hit. I remember thinking...what is this? I thought it was part of a movie or something.
Up until that day I really had no clue what the twin towers were to be honest. I lead a sheltered life
Anyways... I realized pretty fast that this wasn't a movie. We were all watching the tv,including the kids. They were too young at the time to know what was going on. But we tell them about it now when they hear about it at school.
I remember feeling the world just stop when it was happening.
We could not believe what was going on..and we stayed glued to that television for the next few weeks.

At this point it was a pretty morbid feeling I was having. I didn?t really feel sadness per say, more like a ?shit happens? sorta feeling.

Then the third plane struck the Pentagon. Not quite sure what my feelings were then, if they were anger, disbelief, or what. All that kept going through my mind was ?what the FUCK??. I have no idea how or why the plane was not shot down by the Pentagon. ?Where are the fucking lasers? Where are the SHIELDS??. Yeah, that?s over exaggerated, but for the Pentagon to get struck that?s all that kept going through my mind is why wasn?t the plane destroyed?

It was a really shitty day at work afterwards, eventually boss let us all go home and told us to pray (he was positive they had a nuke planted somewhere in the states and were going to detonate it later that day). And yet that thought of WHY still remained, and remains to this day. The White House has some AA equipment. The Pentagon.. doesn?t? One of the major nerve centers of our country is essentially powerless..? I was awestruck and still am.

THEN fast forward five years later. Has anything changed? Airport security is still abysmal (and yet they still practice scare tactics to make you think their shit is working), the twin towers STILL haven?t been rebuilt after five years (they haven?t even started!)? it?s still a very shitty feeling I get thinking about 9-11, with so many questions still left unanswered and a government whose ineptness CONTINUES to grow (Katrina). It sucks =\

I woke up shortly after first plane hit the building. At this time I didn't know anything had happened. It was a day when I took a day off and go to ukranian consulate to apply for visa, as I had tickets for the next week on hands already.
When I woke up as usually I looked outside of windows. From 5th floor my view oversees most of Brooklyn and usually roofs of some buildings are visible on clear weather. I sow smoke leaning torwards Brooklyn and Staten Island. I looked at it as weather anomality, maybe a storm was brewing, I couldn't have imagine such devostation for my city, 15 miles away from me. At I didn't spend whole lot time looking at it as I was rushing to take care of my visa.
In about 15 minutes I was out getting in to car. I drove several blocks through Brooklyn and got out on a highway heading to Brooklyn Bridge to NYC.
All the way to Brooklyn brigde roads were empty, I never seen them so empty like that even at night, city alway has some traffic on major roads, it was very strage. I've past through a cloud of dust, fire dust, which from far appeard like a fog. I got to Brooklyn Bridge ram, police car was blocking it, office was standing beside. I've stoped and asked what was happening. as cop pointed in the direction of downtown city I turned my head to see a cloud of black smoke over were Twin Towers usually had been proudly standing.
I was devistated, as I pulled of from a highway to turn back I entered downtown Brooklyn area, it was total chaos, next few weeks felt like being in a war zone. Rest of the day was spend in trying to find a way out as traffic was completely shut in that area of town, and more importantly trying get in touch with everyone you know. telephone lines were nearly unusable for the rest of the day, very little calles could get through heavily loaded lines.
Ashes covered city for the next following days reminding everytime of tradegy.
Luckily many people who were suppoused to be in WTC area that day and that time by mear luck or coincidence weren't there, many were on their way.

I realize several people don't like this song, but I do. It still gives me goosebumps. Damn good lyrics:

Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day?
Out in the yard with your wife and children?
Working on some stage in LA?
Did you stand there in shock at the site of
That black smoke rising against that blue sky?
Did you shout out in anger
In fear for your neighbor?
Or did you just sit down and cry?

Did you weep for the children
Who lost their dear loved ones
And pray for the ones who don't know?
Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble
And sob for the ones left below?

Did you burst out in pride
For the red white and blue?
The heroes who died just doing what they do?
Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer
And look at yourself to what really matters?

I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith hope and love are some good things he gave us
And the greatest is love

Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day?
Teaching a class full of innocent children?
Driving down some cold interstate?
Did you feel guilty cause you're a survivor?
In a crowded room did you feel alone?
Did you call up your mother and tell her you love her?
Did you dust off that Bible at home?
Did you open your eyes and hope it never happened?
Close your eyes and not go to sleep?
Did you notice the sunset the first time in ages?
Speak with some stranger on the street?
Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow?
Go out and buy you a gun?
Did you turn off that violent old movie you're watching
And turn on "I Love Lucy" reruns?
Did you go to a church and hold hands with some stranger?
Stand in line and give your own blood?
Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family and
Thank God you had somebody to love?

My wife (now EX) and I were both booked on flights that morning. She had left the house early to catch a Phoenix to DC flight and I was getting out of the shower when I looked up at the TV and saw a building smoking heavily off in the distance.

As I shaved and watched TV the second plane hit the second tower. Within minutes my wife (now EX) called from the airport telling me her flight and all others were delaye with no ETA on when they would take off.

With in the hour I called her to tell her the news was reporting that all air traffic was likely shut down in all of the US.

My flight that morning was Phoenix to Seattle so I never really felt like I dodged a bullet by missing it, though I am sure had we taken off I would have been stuck in another state for a week of more. But her flight was to be en route to DC and she was pretty shaken up about it.

Obviously we were glues to the TV for the next few days in shock and disbelief at the images and stories that were comming out.

I was pulling an all-nighter and happened to come on to GFY in time to hear the first reports, then turned on the TV and saw the 2nd plane hit.

I have never watched the news since as anything newsworthy will hit GFY first

I was in bed in Phoenix when the first plane hit. My had the news on and she woke up saying a plane had hit the WTC. I brushed it off at first, then remembered a plane hit the Empire State Building in the 1940s. So I got up, poured myself a glass of OJ, and sat down just in time to watch the second plane hit the second tower. It was a moment of my life I will never forget.

I called my mother in California; She loved NYC and would want to know. She was pissed that I called by eventually turned on the TV. A short time later I touched base with Steve Lightspeed and Tanker; Steve quickly decided we would all stay home. We watched the events unfold from home and talked on ICQ. Later that day I did lunch with Steve - one of the oddest meals I've ever had. We were the only ones there besides the staff; The place was silent and even Steve and I talked in hushed voices.

Alan Jackson. A country singer. It's definitely worth listening to, as the way he sings it is much more moving than just reading the words. I found this video on Google that has the song in it:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...ped+turning%22

Watch that and listen to the song. The sound quality isn't the best, but at least you can hear the song. I'll look for better quality.

I worked at Verio at the time in Philadelphia Pa and was driving to the office in my truck.... usually I listened to the Local news radio for traffic when the 1st plane hit ... It seemed odd since it was really clear out and then I thought, welll, it could be raining and there was a plane that hit the Empire state building in 1947 I'd read a book about .....

Then the 2nd plane hit .... I knew in my soul something was deeplky wrong.

I get to the office, head into our Conference room where we had a giant TV set up and there is my team watching a live feed on CNN of the tower dropping...12 people in silence and some women starting to cry.

The office looked over Willow Grove Naval Air station where there was an air show the weekend before and a SHITLOAD of fighter planes of all kinds just parked there. Looked at my boss and said that I am getting the fuck outta here in case its an attack of some kind, I dont want to be across from the base.

Driving home like mad and then the pentagon and Flight 93 hit in PA.

Now, im fucking freaked out since im on the road and around this area ( Plymouth Meeting PA ) there are a few airfields .... I get home and my wife is here and then we just watched all day as to what went down.

later that afternoon I had an appointment at the local mall with the chick that usually cuts my hair...we went there anyway and there was NO ONE in the mall ... She gave me the cut and we all broke out.

my mother was beside herself since I had at the time travelled to NYC + Wash DC .. She couldnt reach my cell since the all the phone lines were all buzy and the cell was out ..... That night I was able to reach her to tell her that I was home the whole time ... She told me that she spent the day crying and praying that I was not in NYC that day.

I was in the Towers only 20 days earlier on business .....

a VERY good friend of mine was to be on the flight from Logan that DID hit the towers ... he told me that he took the plane often for business over the years and that day had a feeling overcome him to NOT get on that plane. Even though it was a sold out flight there was almost no one on board.

He skipped the flight and to this day is in Therpay to deal with being that close to death.

I searched for Alan Jackson and "where were you when the world stopped turning" came up. It's him singing those lyrics you posted.
It's live at the CMA's.

Was asleep when it happened, when I got up, the wife said a plane had hit the WTC, I turned on CNN, watched for 20 minutes, went back to work.

Not to sound heartless or cruel, but there was nothing I could do about it, so I wasn't going to sit in front of the TV watching it unfold.

Actually, at the end of the video it turns out to be some guy singing karaoke. But you can watch a full length video of Alan Jackson himself here:

http://www.cmt.com/artists/az/jackson_alan/videos.jhtml

The song's about halfway down that page.

I was working in a news station here in Phoenix and that is definitely a day I will never forget. I remember I came out of my edit bay after the 1st plane had already hit and everyone was standing around glued to the TV and they told me what happened. I started watchibng with them and by that time we had cut into CNN coverage because we were the affiliate in town. Shortly after that the second plane hit and it was one of the strangest feelings actually seeing that happen.

One of the first things that popped in my head after the second plane hit was that they were going to hit Washington. Then the reports of the other 2 planes came in and the day just got crazier and crazier. Each time they would show another new angle or another new clip of either the planes hitting or the buildings collapsing you couldn't help but almost get like a knot in your stomach.

When you work in news and something big like that happens you usually make what's called a mini stock, which is a tape that has all the key footage on it in case you need to reference that event in the future. Needless to say I have seen all that footage many more times than I care to remember and it still amazes how something like that can happen. I still get chills too whenever I see a movie filmed before that day that shows shots of the WTC. It's just one of those things you just wish never happened...

That was the first thread on GFY where I felt a sense of community on the board.

I will bump the first thread that I started. I used to do that every 9/11 in what I thought was an act of remembrance but then some people told me I was being sick so I stopped.

Just finished listening to it.
It's a great song.

I was asleep in Berkeley, CA. The phone rang, it was my friend Christine. "Are you aware of events in the world?" -- was exactly what she said. "No, what do you mean?" -- was exactly what I said. "The World Trade Center is gone..." -- was exactly what she said. I went over to the television, and then I must have watched the image of a plane flying into a building 1,000 times before I took a break.

In June of 2004, I finally made it over there and took this picture -- http://profitlabinc.com/NEWS/FOTOS/T...-His-Legs.html

I was in the middle of a 20 mile hike to the field for a week long training event(Marine Corps). We were pulled out of the field in the middle of the night and put on standby to go to war. 6 months later my unit was in Iraq.

I was working for Red Hat software at the time. We were at a huge trade show in Atlanta at the time, at the convention center in the CNN headquarters building. Several people that worked for us, were in New York at the time, for business at the WTC. We were gearing up for a good trade show and had actually scored a booth right accross from microsoft;)

One of the guys I worked with was a marine in the reservers.. he was actually one of the main characters depicted in the movie Blackhawk Down. Before we even heard news of the planes hitting (we were busy prepping everyone and our booth, etc), and he got a call. We didnt have a TV or anything there, and thats how we found out. He was shipped out to Afganistan that day. Red Hat called a bus for us to bring us back to Raleigh. It was the weirdest vibe walking around downtown Atlanta after that happened. Downtown was crowded with people as usual, but they were just all in shock.

We were kinda worried because we were at CNN headquarters wich is really a major communications hub for the country. We all kinda had it in the back of our minds that this probably wasnt the best place to be..

I went to ground zero last year when I was in New York. My parents offered to take me on previous visits home but I didn't think I could take it. It was still very moving even at the time I did it. Also it was odd because I had seen the area, the church, etc so many times on that day and since if almost felt like I was walking into a news report.

I was asleep. My son called from college about it and I turned on the TV and told him I was on my way to SC to pick him up. Called my parents - my Dad was on his way to downtown ATL, heard about it on the radio, and turned back around figuring if they were going to hit big cities, ATL would be one of them.

My Mom finally convinced me my son was safe in rural SC then my family started calling me asking if worse came to worse, could they come up here since my town has own phone system, electric company, water supply etc.

However, Jimmy Carter has a house in my neighborhood. I don't think he was here but one of his relatives must have been because secret service was swarming all over the place for about 2 weeks. Lots of military planes flying around too.

Talking to friends who lived in NYC said the weirdest thing was walking around because you always used WTC as your "guide" for where you were and what direction you were heading in.

Sad and scary day.

I was on I-95 driving to my office listening to Howard Stern.

At first I thought it was all a joke on his show, until my cell phone started ringing off the hook.

When I got to the office everybody was in the conference room glued to the TV and pretty much freaked out especially when we watched the 2nd plane hit live.
