American arrested in Philippines cybersex raid

MANILA (Reuters) - Philippine police arrested a 39-year-old American man after raiding a "cybersex" den he was suspected of running near a former U.S. airforce base north of the capital Manila, officials said on Tuesday.

Police said Monday's raid was the 10th such operation to be raided in August as they step up their campaign against Internet pornography rings that are often run by foreigners.

The dens charge customers, mostly Western men, a few dollars to watch images of Philippine women and girls through webcam technology.

Salvador Manga, head of the region's criminal investigation team, said police found six women, including two minors, working as "models" in an Internet cafe in Angeles City operated by James Paul Kelly, an American who held a Philippine tourist visa.

Police said they were searching for Kelly's partner who was believed to be Canadian.

"They violated several Philippine laws for operating a pornographic site," Manga told reporters.

"They were not supposed to be operating any business in the country".

Catholic Church officials and non-government organisations have been raising pressure on the authorities to crack down on Web sites run by foreign pornography syndicates.

Police said an American husband and wife escaped arrest last week when they raided another Internet cafe in Angeles City.

In May, two Dutch brothers died during a shootout when police raided a cybersex den in Manila.

That is crazy hearing that news cause I thought surely I would see his name. Must be cracking down on cybersex hard over there?

Reuters is wrong. There was no shootout and they did not resist. They were coldly executed by the police.

They shot back I heard. And they DID pack, and they WOULD have shot back before risking prison.

Their bar in Angeles (on which they spent a shitload) remains lacked and boarded still I believe.

Otherwise their deaths would have been listed as suicides or murder/suicide.

Such is the way of the Philippines.

Another friend of mine there hated himself so much when he committed suicide (as determined my the Barangy police), he shot himself in the back of the head.

Twice.

The difference between the 3rd world and the 1st world is not just the 2nd world.

Jeez....I bet they found out he stole a police gun just before he killed himself?

When the Dutch government found out that they were just liquidated they did nothing. They did not even call back the ambassador. Bunch of pussies. Makes me feel real safe when I travel abroad.
The police-officer who shot them is celebrated as a hero in the Philipines right now.

Officers.

Plural.

It happened at one of their cam house in Quezon and it was a MVI strike team they butted heads with, not just local Barangy morons.

Automatic weapons.

But you are right, their Captain would be celebrated.

Vale to my friends, but they DID die as they lived.

"The Council has longed studied the sex industry in The Philippines. They realize that the sex industy is made up of 'B' and 'C' type mediocre personalities, late to middle age wage employees, and are those who would have an abnormally difficult time getting laid under the most normal of circumstances. Most are harmless. They visit our island, they enjoy. Some even get married to the very girls they rent. The Council has no problem with these types of individuals.

The Council's concerns are those in the sex industry who prefer to defile young children, inflict pain on helpless girls, and trample around the very nation they are visiting without respect. The regulation of these individuals is the sole purpose of the Council. Amidst a greater domestic and international problem, the Council's responsibility is only towards the foreign owned sex industy.

The Council fully understands American globalization and the socio-cultural, economic ramifications of such a system. In time, that problem will be addressed. For now, they realize young girls in poverty need to survive. Because of a very subpar government, their only means of survival is prostitution. Prostitution in essence is service. Ideally, men pay and the girls provide. At the end of the transaction both parties profit. But as you and the Council know this does not always prove true. Young girls and children become victims of such transactions. It is when this happens, that the Council reacts with complete bias and prejudice.

The Council is not a court system, it is merely a tool for punishment. For the sake of effeciency, the Council has collected information on expatriots in The Philippines who engage in the sex industry. In addition, the Council has informants in all ports, sea and air. Also, the Council collects information from all hotels, pension houses, and various apartments that foreign nationals patronize. Lastly, the Council is fully aware of the very industry it is responsible for. The Council has knowledge of all brothel and club activities, to include those run by Monet Tan (Angeles City), Japanese syndicates, and the Lim brothers (Burgos Street, EDSA Entertainment Complex, etc.). The Council has eyes and ears in the lower end of the industry, such as the street activities and even GFY. In short, the Council is watching. And when an act is committed, the Council will be there.

As a foreigner I don't think I have ever felt safe about traveling to the Philippines...much less running a cybersex den under the constant threat of armed 'liquidation'! It sucks that anybody even got hurt or arrested but I'm not sure how much of a surprise this was...everybody knows that political corruption is rampant in those areas.

Shooting content is JUST as illegal.

At least 2 guys I know are guests of the Government for doing just that.

In my personal experience, underage is NOT as big a problem there as maybe it was in days gone by, BUT false identity documents ARE rife and underage "stitch ups" are commonplace.

There is always 2 sides to every story.

Aloha, Jack. Actually, the Pinoy migration to Hawaii came in 2 waves--"manongs" or sugarcane workers which the US imported in the 20s because of anti-Chinese immigration restrictions and post-1965 immigration (the US lifted race-based/hemisphere-based restrictions). Much of the reason for the migration was economic. A few also left to flee the repressive Marcos regime during the 70s to mid 80s. Not too many fled because of the "morality police" here... although Im sure there are a few instances of that.
