Size Of Porn Industry Worldwide

According to uands.com, consumer spending (for movies, TV shows, DVD, VOD, PPV, VHS etc but not for internet subscriptions) for 2006 will be $83.1 billion (cited in the July 6, 2006 issue of DVD News).

According to the VSDA July 2005 state of the industry report, porn accounted for 2% of DVD sales. If this number holds true for porn's percentage of global spending on entertainment, porn worldwide would be a $1.662 billion industry.

VSDA estimates U.S. DVD/video sales and rentals at $24.3 billion for 2005. The 2% figure would place U.S. porn DVD/VHS sales and rentals at $486 million for 2005.

The most commonly cited number for porn's worldwide size is $57 billion (including internet subscriptions), which is what AVN President Paul Fishbein told 60 Minutes (Nov 21, 2003 broadcast).

Rank Entertainment Media Percentage
1 DVD sell-through 46%
2 Box Office 24%
3 DVD Rental 17%
4 Pay TV, Cable, Satellite, PPV, VOD, etc 13%

As porn receives no money from box office sales, 2% of the remaining revenues would amount to about $1.25 billion.

Porn will never die. It started when man was born and will vanish when life on earth no longer exists.

Clearly 57-83 BN dollar estimates are just guesses that include unknowable expenses on live entertainment such as escort services, but I would venture that 1.25 BN is low, Luke.

Out of curiousity, I did a cursory search (thanks, Google!) turned up the following reported company revenues (in millions).

Playboy* = 328
NOOF* (Ten) = 50
Hustler = 150
Vivid = 100
Wicked = 50

* Only Playboy and New Frontier are publicly traded; the rest of the revenue numbers above were recently bandied about by corporate officers for the respective companies. Even with a big grain of salt, let's assume those numbers are vaguely correct. That's 678 MM right there.

Back of the envelope, the remaining 50 production companies (e.g., Adam & Eve, Digital Playground, etc.) have to have revenues of approx 300 MM between them. Now we're at 978 MM.

There are at least three online companies (AFF, Nasty Dollars, and Bang Brothers) which make over 100 MM each, and several others, such as i Friends, who are making over 50 MM. There are several dozen others making tens of MMs. Between all of them I'd call it it another 500 MM. Now we're at 1.478 BN. Granted, not all domestic.

What is not being taking into account is what retailers, hotel chains, cable and satellite providers are taking off the top. It has to be another 500MM.

Thanks to Google and several years wasted on porn punditry, this so-called expert estimates "domestic" porn media at approx. 2BN dollars annually.

If I'm right, the money is really being made by hookers and pimps, and they work offline

re: noof

The company's Internet division sells monthly memberships to its website, TEN.com (TEN stands for The Erotic Networks), as well as pre-packaged video and photo content to webmasters for a monthly fee. Fourth-quarter net revenue from Internet services dropped 14% to $600,000 from $700,000 a year earlier.

So ten.com does about $2.4 million rev/year
