.xxx can still be stopped but YOU must take action NOW

In the minutes of the most recent meeting with ICM, the ICANN board made it clear that they are concerned whether or not there is industry support for .xxx. (ICANN is charter bound not to approve any new specialty TLDs unless there is a strong demonstration of support from the industry or constituency it would serve.)

ICM states that it has 24 large companies strongly on board in support of .xxx. This, of course, is a joke, as there are thousands of companies in the adult industry.

BUT... if the other 99% of companies stay silent on this issue, ICANN will never know the depth of the opposition, and ICM will get its way.

EVERY PERSON on GFY needs to take 5 minutes and send a short email identifying themselves as a person in the industry and describing why they are opposed to .xxx. It doesn't have to be long and eloquent, it just has to state that you are opposed, the name of your company, and briefly why you are opposed. Send your statement to [email protected]. Make sure you get the confirming email back (takes about a minute) and then respond to that, otherwise your email will not be read.

If you post on other boards and communities, PLEASE repost this notice.

If you are connected to media that reaches the adult industry, PLEASE encourage them to cover this story.

For those of you not aware of the situation, ICM is talking out of both sides of its mouth, telling the anti-porn forces that .xxx will "help prevent children from being exposed to pornography" and "keep those who don't want porn from accidentally running into it" while at the same time telling adult webmasters that ".xxx will always be voluntary."

Obviously, these two statements are totally opposed to one another.

In the best case, .xxx will simply be another top level domain that all of us will have to register our key .com domain names in to keep cybersquatters or others from acquiring them... at a minimum cost of about 60 bucks per year per domain, because ICM will be charging all of the registrars close to that much as the "wholesale" registration fee.

In the worst case, various state, local, governmental authorities could decide that all adult content must be under a .xxx domain or risk violating some law or regulation. Such policies would undoubtedly trigger a first amendment fight, but as we know, the loser conservatives have an amazing way of getting their agenda pushed through. Another scenario would have Visa or Mastercard declaring that they will not process for any adult content unless it is on an .xxx domain. This would be harder to defend on a First Amendment basis, as Visa is not restricting speech, only commerce.

So... I hope that you can see this is NOT an issue that anyone should be sitting back and saying "Let others carry the ball." I very strongly recommend that you write to ICANN telling them that the adult industry opposes .xxx, that you personally oppose it, that it will not reduce children's access to adult content, and any other relevant points you wish to make.

ICANN does listen, and a number of its governing representatives are on record opposing .xxx, but ICM has hundreds of thousands of dollars into this proposal, and stands to make millions if it passes, so they will not give up easily. If you operate an adult site, or provide services to those who do, you cannot sit back and not take action.

The new deadline for comments is March 9th.

We ALL have to email, and to get others in this "sponsored community" to also voice their lack of support for.xxx.

It does stand a pretty good chance if the application has managed to be resurected 3 times.

The opposition to the application has to come from verifiable members of the adult community in order for it to carry any weight.

The opposition from religious lunatics who are against anything to do with sex means nothing to ICANN since their batshit crazy comments have nothing to do with ICM's application or just the extention itself.

If you've sent opposition in some time ago, it's wise to send it in again. ICANN is looking at opposition to *current* proposals.

I got a question (that's probably been answered thousands of times, but who knows where)

If an .xxx domain system is created, why would we be obliged to use them? I don't see television shows or networks forced to use the .tv domain. I'm just asking, I certainly don't want the industry forced into getting xxx domains, but I'm curious as to the explicit repercussions.

But in the instance of .xxx, it seems like some Congressperson beholding to political contributions from right-wing religious folks/entities, or him/herself seeking "protect the children" (which it really doesn't effectively do as well as .kids might) publicity, will quickly attach a mandate to an other progressing and popular bill for all adult sites to be sectored into .xxx, thus quickly defeating any boycott of .xxx:-(((?????

That would suck. It would be an American bill, wouldn't it? You could essentially, host your adult .com names on a server that isn't on american soil, no? I'm not saying that's great, either. My hosting company's American. But this apocalypse people speak of seems quite a ways from that scenario.

Once again, not criticizing. I'll do my part and e-mail, because I certainly believe we have the right to choose whatever domain we want, so long as we're not offering teletubby pictures, and showing something far more shocking, though possibly less gay.

As for a .kids, I think that would be awesome! Or maybe some kind of cookie or meta tag that tells browsers or filters that a page is "safe for kids", "violent content" and "porn content". I'd be satisfied with that. It's not like I want kids looking at my mgp or galleries. I'd be happy putting a meta tag that will block out unwanted surfers. I'll save on bandwith!

Now that I think about it, maybe there should be some kind of proactive movement to create an industry-supported tag that would have their sites blocked from those surfers that don't want porn on their machines.

Instead of just watching these events unfold, and possibly being shoved into a corner with .xxx domains, instead of trying to simply prevent this from happening, why not offer a reasonable alternative?

Let's bump this to the top where maybe it'll get the attention of other fine folks to also email ICANN denouncing .xxx.

Subject: As Part of The "Sponsored Community", like the VAST majority, I ask ICANN to Permanently Kill .xxx
From: "Dave C." <davec@xxxxxxxxxx>
Date: Sat, 3 Mar 2007 23:54:35 -0800

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My stage name is "Dave Cummings" and, besides my www.davecummings.com website,
I own many adult dot.com domains. Contrary to ICM's subjective claims, I see
almost ZERO Sponsored Community support for .xxx, but I do indeed see
CONSIDERABLE opposition to it. Please permanently deny .xxx ---it's NOT wanted
by the Sponsored Community, and it's not an appropriate potential legal mess
for ICANN to become trapped into.

Sincerely,

Dave Cummings/D. Charles Conners

This is important, perhaps THE most dangerous challenge to the Adult Internet as we now know it.

Please call upon everyone you know to voice opposition to .xxx today or tomorrow.

when posting, be sure to include in the subject line of your email that will be the subject line of your message post, that you object/against .XXX

makes it easier for them to count up the posts.
