The Catholic Church in Tucson AZ went belly up today. This has to be the funniest CH 11 letter ever written.

Our Diocese submits the reorganization case and the reorganization plan with the belief that this represents the best opportunity for healing and for the just and fair compensation of those who suffered sexual abuse by workers for the Church in our Diocese -- those who are currently known and those who have not yet made the decision to come forward.

This is the Bishop who wrote that.

I can't believe people still are buying any of this Catholic Church crap these days. What a load of bs they shovel out every Sunday. And you'd have to be a complete moron to let your little kids anywhere these fuckers.

What cracks me up is that an individual church is going chapter 11, but Vatican City is doing just fine.

Keep giving them your money.

The archdioscese of Portland filed for bankrupt protection earlier this summer. It's not individual churches typically, but regional groups of churches, who are indeed legally/financially insulated from the Vatican. Though diocese are further trying to insulate themselves from individual parishes now...they might still retain the church structure, but lease it to a parish. If a priest at the parish does something wrong, the diocese can say "sorry, that's not us," and limit the damage to whatever cash that parish had on hand.

I read of a couple dioces that were also setting up non-profit puppet corporations to give their real estate and other assets to, prior to declaring bankruptcy...basically a shell game to give as little as possible to the abuse victims.

The gov't ought to use the RICO statutes in some of these cases, in my opinion.

It was his the basis of his decision to pursue "relativity" or "quantum mechanics".

Curiously enough, the wonderful and well-known biography Albert Einstein, Creator and Rebel, by Banesh Hoffmann (1972) does quote from Einstein's 1945 letter to Raner. But maddeningly, although Hoffmann quotes most of the letter (194-195), he leaves out Einstein's statement: "From the viewpoint of a Jesuit Priest I am, of course, and have always been an atheist." Hoffmann's biography was written with the collaboration of Einstein's secretary, Helen Dukas. Could she have played a part in eliminating this important sentence, or was it Hoffmann's wish? I do not know. However, Freeman Dyson (1996) notes "that Helen wanted the world to see, the Einstein of legend, the friend of school children and impoverished students, the gently ironic philosopher, the Einstein without violent feelings and tragic mistakes." Dyson also notes that he thought Dukas "profoundly wrong in trying to hide the true Einstein from the world." Perhaps her well-intentioned protectionism included the elimination of Einstein as atheist.

Although not a favorite of physicists, Einstein, The Life and Times, by the professional biographer Ronald W. Clark (1971), contains one of the best summaries on Einstein's God: "However, Einstein's God was not the God of most men. When he wrote of religion, as he often did in middle and later life, he tended to...clothe with different names what to many ordinary mortals--and to most Jewsa--looked like a variant of simple agnosticism...This was belief enough. It grew early and rooted deep. Only later was it dignified by the title of cosmic religion, a phrase which gave plausible respectability to the views of a man who did not believe in a life after death and who felt that if virtue paid off in the earthly one, then this was the result of cause and effect rather than celestial reward. Einstein's God thus stood for an orderly system obeying rules which could be discovered by those who had the courage, the imagination, and the persistence to go on searching for them"(19).

Einstein continued to search, even to the last days of his 76 years, but his search was not for the God of Abraham or Moses. His search was for the order and harmony of the world.

his search was for "order and harmony" which he believed "the superior being" wanted us to know.

"quantum theory = probability mathematics " = chaos

I just want to know why the priests aren't in prison for sexual molestation and the bishops aren't in prison for aiding and abedding.

In Ann Arbor, where I live, the church used a combination of tactics. I think every priest they had for the past 40 years was accused of molestation, but most were beyond the statue of limitations, one they suppressed evidence and tied up in courts until the statue of limitations passed, and the most recent priest they paid the victim hush money, the way Michael Jackson did...the perp bribes the victim, who agrees to obstruct justice by stonewalling authorities. So for maybe a $200k in bribes and another $100k in legal fees, the church can pay for priests to have sex with kids without getting in trouble. This is from a church that blew a couple million on a pipe organ, so that's nothing to them.
